February is Family Month

Brian Porter

February is more than just a month for giving chocolates or roses to your Valentine. It’s also a month to celebrate families, especially on Family Day (Feb. 20).

At Family Service Toronto we celebrate families every day, but this month we’re putting special effort into recognizing our work with newcomer communities through a project called Healthy Families Healthy Communities (HFHC).

New Report Card looks at provincial poverty

Media attention has turned once again to the theme of poverty with today’s release of the provincial version of the 2011 Report Card on Child and Family Poverty.

“If the Ontario government wants to stay on track and reduce child poverty, it has to see poverty reduction as a priority, a key consideration in public sector decision making,” says Ontario Campaign 2000 in the report launched at a Queen’s Park media conference.

FST’s centennial site goes mobile

Lyna Nguyen

Our new centennial website is now compatible with smartphones.

That means all content at www.100for100.org is formatted for the smaller screen of a mobile device. Now it’s easier on the eyes to learn about FST’s history, its work, special centennial events and also to follow our latest blogs. And of course you can also make an online donation to support our work through a link to the Canada Helps website. Just type in www.100for100.org on your mobile browser and it will automatically redirect and display the website on your smartphone on the go.

Welcome to our centennial planning and giving site

In just over two years, Family Service Toronto will celebrate 100 years as one of the city’s vital social service organizations. Since 1914, we’ve been helping families and individuals face challenges and make positive changes in their lives.

As we count down to the start of 2014, we will mark a century of life-changing work in this constantly evolving city with a series of events and activities that will celebrate our past and give focus to our future.

Poverty report highlights our social reform role

Brian Porter

Attracting media attention – especially national coverage – is always a struggle for the social services sector.

But Family Service Toronto managed to do just that in late November through the work of its Social Reform unit and Campaign 2000, a non-partisan, cross-Canada network of 120 national, provincial and community organizations committed to working to end child and family poverty in Canada.
